Winning a national innovation grant — from open idea to funded six-month programme
SIDN fonds Pionier grant · Sterk Internet programme · MeshSat — open-source emergency communication
MeshSat keeps messages moving when the internet, mobile networks or other central systems fail. It bridges radio technologies people already carry — LoRa mesh, amateur radio, SMS, satellite — so a message that can't get through on one channel can still arrive on another. To get it out of the workshop and into the hands of Dutch volunteer emergency-communication groups, it needed funding.
Co-owner of MeshSat and lead on the funded programme — applicant, and the named contact for the project on SIDN fonds' own site. I work on the engineering and the hardware protocol internals alongside my partner, and I own the coordination, delivery, documentation and reporting.
Scoped a fundable six-month programme with nine concrete deliverables out of an ongoing technical project — a hard line to draw, and the one the fund cares most about. Built the budget and financing plan, wrote the project plan and the full application, produced and subtitled the video pitch, and worked through the fund's feedback round before final submission. Since the award: the grant agreement, bank and communication administration, and the reporting schedule that runs to April 2027.
Awarded. Published on SIDN fonds' own project list, running 1 November 2026 – 30 April 2027: two portable field kits offered to Dutch volunteer emergency-communication organisations to test in the field, a satellite measurement campaign with every raw result published — including the ones that fail — and the software made usable by people without a technical background.
This project is made possible with support from SIDN fonds — the Dutch fund for a strong internet.
